A Mother Daughter Date (recap)

Kalimera my blogloves!

I hope that you all had a wonderful weekend! My week was very busy last week, so it was nice to be able to unwind with my beautiful mama, who flew up to Toronto on something of a whim (three days notice!) to spend the weekend with me. It was so worth clearing my plans for <3 I was just home the weekend before, if you’ll remember, and I had just started to miss my parents. I’m never lonely, here, not really, but I do miss them dreadfully when I’m all the way in Toronto and they’re in Montreal. So yes, long story short, it was great to see her.

We had a mother-daughter date weekend, which we promised is going to happen more often. It had everything you’d imagine, including mani/pedis, shopping and lots of sharing plates while eating out. We also totally failed at a game of Scrabble (my mom’s favorite) and did a little bit of shopping for the loft, which was a great time.

I don’t have recipes for you today, but I had some incredible meals over the course of the weekend that I’ll share with you now. Ready? Go!

A spinach, mango, feta and grilled shrimp salad. This was enormous, and I totally demolished it except for a few of the shrimp. Yum!

Truffled Mushrooms, Arugula, Shaved Regiano with Lemon infused Olive Oil; heaven.

Steam Veggies, Blackened Chicken and BBQ Chicken to share at the Caribbean Grill

One of my favorite meals was one that we “made” ourselves. We went to the market and bought little tastes of all of our favorite things: hummus (of course), olive tapenade, creamy brie cheese, sundried tomatoes, marinated veggies, olives, etc. In Greece, these appetizer plates are known as “Pikilia,” and it’s one of my favorite ways to eat. You get such a variety of tastes and flavors, which means that you fill up faster, yes, but also that you enjoy every bite. May I say one thing, please, to try? Hummus + olives. To DIE for.

Bits and bites of everything

We also hit up some of my favorite home decor stores, including my beloved West Elm. I go there almost daily to try and get things for the loft, which is finally (after about a year of living here) nearing completion. I go and I take pictures of everything that I think might work, bring them home, look at them again, go back, etc. You get the picture. Everybody on staff knows me, which is a little embarrassing, but they get a kick out of it. So do my coworkers, who sometimes tag along to give their expert opinions on oh, chandliers, say:

Thanks, boys. The chandelier was a resounding "yes"

I took mom to all of my favorite places, and we got busy. She has a wonderful eye, and was able to yay/nay her way through my 13510135 pictures at warp speeds.

Getting a sense for the color palette I’m looking at right now? It has a very neutral, organic, almost beachy feel to it. I want it to feel like a fairytale garden that you just happened to discover on your walk to the beach. (blush) That’s why the colors are so natural, and why there are about six billion plants in here, including this weekend’s latest addition, a baby fig tree!! I’ll snap some pictures of him for you later, but it’s so cute, and already bursting with fruit. I know it’s so typical for this Mediterranean Miss to have a fig tree in her apartment, but what can you do ^~ I <3 him.

  • Did you have an idea behind the decor of your house/apartment/etc? A feel or look you were going for?
  • What kind of plants do you have at home? Do you have a favorite one? I have orchids galore, an umbrella palm, a mother-in-law tongue (haha!), an air plant and my fig tree.

We spent a dizzying couple of hours at Sherway, a beautiful mall in Mississauga/Etobicoke. Clothes were bought, jewelry was admired, we raced through Pottery Barn and ended up, finally, at Holt Renfrew, which is a dangerous store to begin with because everything there is just so beautiful. Case and point, these shoes:

As a surprise, my mother had decided that the two of us were going to pick out designer purses to celebrate our date weekend (hers to add to her collection, and mine as the first of my “big league” bags ^~ I definitely can’t afford these on my own -yet- so I was thrilled!) When it came time to decide, though, I got so flustered that we opted to wait and go visit Holts every time we have a date weekend until the “perfect bag” made itself known.

  • Do you have a designer preference? Right now, I’ve been a big fan of this look by Louis Vuitton. It’s so pretty, and although I don’t think I’d wear it year-round here in Canada, it’d be the perfect everyday bag in Florida or California:

This is the Darnier Azur series from their 2010 Cruise Collection

As if I wasn’t giving you enough pictures to swoon over, Mama noticed the overwhelming number of dogs in my area of Toronto. It’s very, very difficult to be here without Molly, our beloved family dog, but living in the big city was just too hard for a pup who grew up in a sleepy french village. Right now, going to school and working as I do, I don’t think I’d have enough time to dedicate to a little life. I’m a big dog person, too, as it happens. Although I may be willing to make an exception someday (graduation present to myself?) for a little Doxie like this one.  I love the idea of being able to travel, easily, with a small dog. Also, as my mom pointed out, Andrew and I can get a big dog together when we’re older ^~ Plus, oh my gosh, there is nothing yappy or annoying about this breed. Feast your eyes, my dears, on the absolute epitome of cute:

And I'm done for.

That pretty much sums up the weekend (and what a note to end it on!) We had a brilliant time. That’s all from me for now – phew! Stay tuned for a product review of a gorgeous natural perfume, plus a recap of yesterday’s date with the lovely Kristin!

Lots of love, bloggies!

  • A baby fig tree? How amazing! Where did you get it??

Sounds like a great weekend with your mom! Love the tasting plate :D

I can’t wait to start decorating my apartment, as soon as we move into our bigger one!! We are going for a natural feel as well, perked up with bright accents :D

I love plants, but Stella eats them :( We do have a pretty little clover plant Nick’s grandma gave us on St. Patty’s that is still alive & kicking!

I have such a thing for coach purses… I think they totally fit in with the city atmosphere!

Ohhh my gosh. That dog. My heart melts! Get one. And I’ll get my bulldog. We can go to the dog park together!! :) :) :)

Hi honeybee! I am so happy you came over yesterday :D I’m sorry if my friends and I were being a little bit -too- silly, we’ve always been a pretty crazy group when we’re together!

I got the fig tree from a florist on Queen – I’ll take you there sometime when we’re having a date. It’s close, and they have so many beautiful plants there!

I love Coach purses too, I have one or two that I absolutely treasure <3

And that dog! I know! Apparently though they are yappy, hard to train, and often overprotective D: and they have a history of back problems (understandable.)

You should definitely get your bulldog, though!

    Hi pretty girl!
My mom is my best friend too, and I have such a special relationship with my dad as well – we’re lucky girls!
YOU HAVE NEVER HAD A FIG?? PLEASE COME TO TORONTO NOWWW!!! Hahaha. Figs took me a little while to “get” (they’re acidic, but very sweet) but now I love them. The idea of having one in the house was too irresistible for my mom and I.
    love you!

  • Wow, I wish I had a baby fig tree in my apartment! We can’t really keep plants in our apartment…our cat, Max, tends to rip apart any kind of plant.

I’m not sure what kind of decorations I want to have in my house. Probably something rustic. I can’t even imagine myself with my own house, though! CRAZY!

I don’t have a favorite designer either…I can’t keep up with them all! I do like Marc Jacobs, actually.

What a cute looking dog :D Glad your mom could come visit!

Last year I couldn’t imagine -myself- in an apartment. The idea that I’ve been shopping for pillar candles and light fixtures is almost laughable to me, even now.

I love MJ. I was playing with some of his beautiful purses when my mom and I were trying things on. Ugh. So simple, but so pretty.

  • The mango shrimp salad looks fantastic! So summery. I’m currently decorating my apartment in a very simple style- just white and hardwood with a few apple-green accents. I’m not a fan of busy decor!! As far as designers go, I’m not a big handbag girl, though I LOVE designer shoes. I promised myself that I’ll own a pair of Louboutins someday!

Hi cherie! It was summery indeed.
I love the feel of that color palette! We should all do blogger house tools someday soon.
I feel you on the Louboutins my dear. I have an aunt who has a collection that would set both of us to tears.

  • Mama:

Had such a wonderful time with you my baby girl!!! We need to start planning our next ‘date’ soon. Did we eat some good food or what!!!!!!
The fall season is about to begin, so keep your eyes open for all that has to offer. There are lots of fall festivals, bazaars……its a wonderful way to spend an afternoon, meet good people– we’ll choose a city and do it, ok?
Give Dolce a snuggle for me, a hello to AB, and tell Mike we’ll keep an eye out for him (no photos next time, promise).

I send you the biggest hugs! I love my girl!

  • Hey love, I’m glad you had such a beautiful time with your mom! I didn’t know you were from QC originally. I’m from Toronto but I did part of my undergrad in Halifax, and it was definitely hard for me to be away from so many people that I love and care about. Do you have family here too? It sounds like you are really close with your mom- so am I- I think that is such a great thing.
I wish I could decorate my apartment. Honestly, I’ve been living here for a few years now and I haven’t done much with the place. It isn’t that I haven’t tried, but I’m so busy with classes and work, and I can’t afford very much in terms of home decor at this point because it is so expensive to live in Toronto! One day when I have a stable career and I move into a new place, I will take the time to make it very “me”. I think it is important for a home to represent who you are and to decorate with things that make you smile, so that it can be a place where you just feel calm and safe.
As for plants, I unfortunately don’t have any real ones, just a few fakies, because Beau chews on them. I know that some plants aren’t good for cats to ingest, and I don’t want him eating my plants anyway, so I just didn’t bother getting anymore. I would love to have a fig plant though.
Holt Renfrew is one of my favourite stores too, and yes, it is dangerous…I literally used to spend hours there, not that I can really afford anything, but I have fun. There is so much to look at, with the makeup, the clothes, the shoes…
I’m sorry, this comment is getting really long as usual, but I just have to say that dog is adorable! I love big dogs too- I’m partial to them because my dog was a German Shepherd- but I really love all dogs and I could see myself having a small dog one day. I’m cutting myself off now- Love you hun. I hope you’re having a great week. <3

Yaaay, a Lauren comment/novel! I love these so much <3
I don’t have family here, unless you count my friends, my boyfriend, and my boyfriend’s very extended family. I guess in a way you could say that I -do- have family, but they aren’t technically “mine.” It gets hard sometimes!
I hear you on the home decor front – I’ve been going to Kijiji and ebay and craigslist as well to find cheaper elements to decorate the house with. I agree that your decor should make you smile.
After reading all these comments, I can’t believe how lucky I am that Dolch isn’t really a plant chewer – I had no idea this was a common thing in plants.
We had an Irish Wolfhound, so I grew up just loving big breeds. There’s something so sweet about a teeny little dog though, especially right now, and then getting a big puppy later on. I’ll keep the blog posted, but it’ll definitely be a couple of years for either.
    Have a wonderful thursday lovie!

  • What a fun weekend! That second dish looks totally gourment, btw!

Did you end up bringing a purse home with you? My favorite bag I own is a Gryson Laura, but one day I’d love to have a Birkin…then again, who wouldn’t? Haha

    [Reply]

    Steph Reply:

    Hi Faith!
It tasted as delicious as it looked, guaranteed. I love the lemon olive oil! I know Giada is partial to a Meyer lemon olive oil she buys in California. ~envy~… on all fronts, really ;)

I had never heard of a Gryson Laura so I looked it up – gorgeous! You have great taste. Love the Birkins, too, they’re so classic and simple. I didn’t walk away with a purse last weekend, I needed more time to decide. Gifts like that don’t come around very often, so I wanted to make sure I picked the right one <3
    Have a beautiful day!!

  • Hey girl! Thanks for the comment on my blog. How have I never come across yours before?! I’m digging your posts. :) Plus it’s nice to find a fellow GTA-er in the blog world!

It sounds like you had an amazing weekend with your mom! Shopping, pampering, and good food sounds like my idea of perfection. Also Holt Renfrew! Oh how I love that place. I think my ultimate dream purse would be a Chanel 2.55, but I’d also love a more practical Marc by Marc Jacobs purse for everyday use. Those LV bags are amazing too!
