Playing Grown-Up (+Pasta Recipe!)

Yasas blogloves!

Let me start by saying thank you so much for the support on my last post. It was very difficult to publish that on here, and I so appreciate your advice/opinions! This is why the blogworld is so great – you make it happen, bloggies <3

Yesterday, as I mentioned, Andrew came over and he and I played host to a couple-friend of ours, Ken and Kate. I was very excited to have friends over for a “formal” dinner party – it seemed so grown up. I’m coming to grips with the fact that I’m an adult a little bit more every day. Sometimes I still think of myself as a little girl.

As happy as I was, Dolce may have been even more enthusiastic. New people = new playmates. He always gets a lot of attention because he is honestly just the cutest thing in the world.  Kate grabbed his favorite feathery toy about two minutes in and they went to town:

Dolce loves it when new friends come to play

But then.. he did this. Destructor-dolch ruined the toy, then decided to play in this bag instead.

Whole Foods bag + feather wand carnage = best toy ever

As it was supposed to thunder last night (which never happened, the Florida-girl in me loves a summer storm) we decided to make dinner inside as opposed to grilling. Being Italian, Andrew whipped up his speciality. It’s his go-to recipe and is at its best right now while everything is in season. This is about as authentic as it gets:

This made my gluten-free heart weep - don't forget to use gluten-free pasta!

Pasta al Regazzo
  • 2-3 gloves fresh garlic
  • 1/2 of a sweet white onion
  • 2 zucchini (we used one yellow squash, one zuch)
  • 1 bunch asparagus (look for slim, snappy stalks with tight buds)
  • 2 packages button mushrooms
  • extra virgin olive oil
  • italian seasoning (dried parsley, basil, oregano and salt)
  • fresh parmigiano-reggiano
  1. Sautee the onion and garlic in olive oil on medium-low heat until the onion is translucent and the smell is almost TOO delicious.
  2. Add italian seasoning (we’re generous here) to the pan. Chop and prepare all of your veggies (we slice everything thinly)
  3. Add veggies to your pot and stir occasionally to ensure even coating. Season to taste while you’re doing so, and add olive oil as needed.
  4. Set water to boil. **
  5. Cook, strain and replace pasta in pasta pot. Pour veggies in with pasta, mix well, then bring the whole pot to the table for an authentic Italian feast.

** Andrew’s family adds salt and olive oil to the pasta water. I strongly encourage you to do this, too! It makes the pasta that much better.

We paired his pasta with two salads, one, a fresh green salad with romaine, and two, this steamed bean salad that I can’t get enough of right now as everything is so fresh and in season:

Fresh green beans with sweet onion, olive oil, rose salt and white balsamic vinegar

We set a pretty fine table, then sat down to feast with glasses of the wine K&K brought.

Not a bad spread if I do say so myself :3 Pictured: Bean salad, Pasta al Regazzo and Tuscan Rotisserie Chicken. Success!

Now this is how you can tell if you’re friends with the right people. As Andrew and I cooked last night, Ken and Kate were determined to tidy the place up. I had made sure that the loft was spotless before they came over, and it was spotless when they left! It was great to not worry about dishes, dirty countertops, etc.

A few short minutes later, the loft was sparkling again, the dishwasher was humming, and we sat down to dessert, beginning with a seasonal treat – champagne grapes:

These are so good, they're light and very sweet - they totally remind you of champagne

Afterwards, everybody enjoyed some peach-raspberry pie that they had brought from Whole Foods. To my delight, Kate brought me a little something special, too!

So sweet of Kate to bring me a GF dessert; Carrot Cake from Whole Foods

This was really, really good. I had half for dessert last night, and the other half for breakfast. Bad idea (sugar crash and BURN), but great idea (delicious. Just delicious.)

In all, I was really happy with our menu.

  • Do you throw dinner parties? What types of menu do you prepare in advance? It’s tough to find a balance of things that can be made ahead vs freshness so that you can enjoy a delish meal, but still chat while you’re making it.

That’s it for my recap, so I’ll leave you with something fun. The lovely Sara tagged me in a questionnaire. I love these little things, so I’m going to answer it. Please answer this yourself with a comment! I’m interested in reading what you’d say, too

Q&A

1. Who was your first celebrity crush/obsession?

My very very first celebrity crush is actually kind of creepy when you think about it because he was old enough to be my grandfather (he was born in 1939, NBD) when I liked him at age, oh, 10, I’d say. Ready? The knife-toting, damsel-rescuing, nature-loving Crocodile Dundee, Paul Hogan.

G'day baby.

2. What was your favorite lunch to take to school when you were little?

I always, always wanted those easy-go snack pack lunches that had you like make your own tiny pizza or whatever. And dunkaroos. Sadly, I was not allowed either, although I thank my mom for it now, those things are narsty.

3. What cartoons did you watch as a kid?

I was more of a reader than a t.v. watcher (my childhood was strongly influened by Sweet Valley High and The Babysitter’s club – remember those?). I was really into Sailor Moon for awhile, and I liked the Saturday Morning Lineup. I also watched a lot of Rugrats, Dexter’s Lab (the way he says Deedee, omg, I’m dying, DEEDEE, ahahahah) and Doug when we were in Florida – yeaah Nicktoons!

4. What was the grossest thing you ate as a kid?

Liver. Oh, does that not count? I’m sure I’ve eaten my share of grass and bugs and things. Actually, I ate an ant once by accident and that was gross – it tasted so sour :\ Also, sandwiches with mayo. I had one once by accident when I was about .. eight? Never again. I’d take the ant over that stuff any day.

5. What was your favorite Disney movie when you were little?

The Little Mermaid. Too easy. (I still pretend I’m a mermaid when I go swimming. I totally could be one, too, my last name means “of the sea” after all ^~ just call me Ariel.)

6. What was your best Halloween costume?

My best friend and I went as a conscience! She was a devil, I was an angel and we blew up this huge balloon that we carried between us that we painted a face on. Too funny.

7. What was your favorite cereal back in the day?

Golden Grahams, baby. I miss them so much! Please come up with a GF version, somebody.

8. Did you have a special beanie baby in your life when you were little.

Heck YES! I loved beanie babies. I still have most of my collection, actually. My favorite one was Magic, the White Dragon.

Magic, the White Dragon

She’s “rare,” and cost $30 at the flea market. I cleaned the whole house that week to get extra allowance to be able to buy her. I ran to the vendor’s stall the next weekend because I was so worried that somebody else had bought her before I had the chance to come back.

Looking forward to reading your answers, bloggies!

LOL I loved your answers! I had that beanie baby – I loved its shiny wings :D

That cake looks suuuuuper tasty – carrot cake is ALWAYS delicious! Also, your kitty is so cute :)

    1. 1st Celeb Obsession = Leo Dicaprio in 2nd Grade. I had a book of fun facts about him…scary.
    2. Bologna and Cheese + BBQ chips crushed in the middle…and pizza lunchables.
    3. ALL OF THEM! Doug, Rugrats, Dexter, Johnny Bravo, Sailor Moon (heyoo!), Rocko’s Modern Life, Hey Arnold
    4. Hmm..grossest thing…probably Vienna (sp?) sausages. Ew.
    5. ALADDIN!
    6. I always had terrible Halloween costumes, seriously. Last year I bought a styrofoam head like Michael did in The Office.
    7. Oreo O’s! Or Cookie Crisp…or Rice Chex? It changed every week.
    8. I had a kangaroo beanie baby that I loved b/c you could take the baby out of it’s pouch..so cute :)

Loved your questions girl! This was a fun one to think about.
The cake was delish and such a treat – I haven’t had cake in like.. years. Literally, just because it never makes sense to buy a whole GF cake for just little ‘ole me. These individual slices from Whole Foods are going to change my life ^~

Johnny Brave + Hey Arnold + Rocko’s Modern Life + Daria + oh gosh what else was there, so many, haha. It’s weird that our cartoons are becoming “old” and obsolete now! We’re ancient, grandma.

I had to look up Vienna sausages to figure what they were – ew. ew. ew. I don’t blame you!

  • Loved The Lion King. Love Disney.
Sweet Valley and Babysitters Club = passions of mine when younger…bigtime. The Fear Street series was popular with me also.
(And I eat everything — I am not vegetarian — I don’t think you need to defend yourself at all).

Fear Street! I read Goosebumps, too, haha.
But yes, SVH was one of my favorite, favorite things to read. I loved Elizabeth so much, and I always envied Lila, although I pronounced her name “lee-lah” when I was little and kind of lost interested when my mom corrected me. Lee-lah sounded so much prettier than lie-lah to me, hah.

Thanks for the support nut <3

U are so sweet , thanks for the comment! Yes Mike should do a guest post, will have to have him do one in the future!! He can tell everyone what it’s like to deal with my healthy eating habits : ) he doesnt eat like me at all!

I hope you have a wonderful day love!!!! What a great dinner party, and the GF carrot cake looks to die for, so sweet of your friend to bring you that!!

Ahhhhhh cake for breakfast, yes major crash! lol! Worth it, sometimes cake is just what you need for breakfast!

Golden Graaahammms!! Sometime if we ever manage to get together at a blogger meetup I know what we’re having for breakfast ^~ They are honestly the very best things ever. Ever.

I think that’s a great idea for a post! I actually think that all of us bloggies should get our boyfriends/fiances/hubbies to write a post during the same week to explain things from their point of view – it’d be a really sweet series!

Have a wonderful day pretty girl <3

  • 1. Leonardo DiCaprio. I’ve been obsessed since he was on Growing Pains and I didn’t even know what I crush was at that time. He’s perfect.
    2. PB&J, duh!! I still love it! The one thing I can’t stand because of childhood lunches is flavored yogurt. I used to get one every day in my lunch, and it was always warm!
    3. My favorite cartoons were Doug, Rugrats, Arthur and Franklin. I hate that most of them are off the air!
    4. Nutella and chocolate chip sandwiches. Does that even need an explanation?
    5. Beauty and the Beast, hands down. I called myself Belle for awhile!
    6. Accordingly, I was Belle for several years for Halloween. We still have the costume in our attic!
    7. Lucky Charms, Cocoa Puffs, Cinnamon Toast Crunch
    8. Yes! My first one was Velvet, a panther. I took him everywhere with me!

    [Reply]

    Steph Reply:

Oh my GOSH I totally forgot he was on Growing Pains!!! I used to love that show, too. The obsession deepens…

I hear you on the flavored yogurt. Ew, for a while, I got those tube yogurts – remember those? That was the peak of yogurt disasters, I think, they were always warm and tasted like synthetic robo-strawberry + plastic tubey container. Ugh. Ew.

4-> I love you for this. Go big or go home, I say!

Beauty and the beast + Hercules are my favorites now. My mom used to say I looked like Belle when I was little <3 I love her the best out of all the Disney princesses.

  • Dolce is SO cute with new visitors, love it :D

I love having people over for dinner, which is why I can not WAIT to move out of our shoebox (when we do, in September(!) I promise I will have you and Andrew over!!). I try to balance it out as well, having everything ready aside from popping something in the oven, slicing bread or whatever so there is time to be social!!

First celeb crush- I LOVED Shane West. He was that guy in A Walk to Remember :D

Favorite school lunch- This is terrible, but I didn’t eat so healthy when I was young… my mom used to pack me thermoses of Ramen Noodles when I was a kid! They would soak up all the “broth” (aka SALT & MSG) and I loved them that way. With Ritz crackers. YUCK.

I didn’t watch as many cartoons as I watched SVH and Babysitter’s club as well! I did love Invader Zim, though :P

I totally ate bugs when I was at camp. It was the “thing” to do. Hey, extra protein, right? ;)

I loved, and always will love Aladdin!

Halloween Costume… I had SO many Disney ones, But I think my oompa loompa one took the cake :D

Cereal- TIE! Golden Grahams && Cap’n Crunch. Mmmm, mm. I still eat Cap’n crunch… every once in a while. Like once a year. :)

I LOVED beanie babies. I had sooo many, I just can’t remember my fave!!

    See you soon lady!!!

    Shane West is a hawtie.
RAMEN!! Ahahahah. Want to hear something gross? When I was in elementary school we used to eat Ramen raw. We’d crunch it to break up the noodles, open up the bag, pour the flavor packet into the bag, close it, shake shake shake and enjoy. EW. bahaha.
I can totally picture the oompa loompa – you must have been ADORABLE.
    See you Monday pretty girl!

  • Hi beautiful! Thank you so much for stopping by my blog! Your blog is stunning, and I’m glad that you found me so I could find you!! Your cat is a-dorable. I love fluffy kitties like that!

Love the beanie babies answer…I still have ALL of mine, over 200 of them hahaha. I finally put them in storage last year and it was so depressing.

For my “dinner parties” I usually like to do something pot-luck, I’ll make a few main dishes and maybe a side but tell everyone else to bring vegetable/dessert/drinks/etc. I do this now because the first time I hosted a dinner party in my house I had 25 people over and it was literally my first week with my own kitchen and I cooked for everyone and it was awesome but soooooo stressful haha. But sounds like you have awesome friends and it was an awesome meal.

    Have a fab weekend!

Aww, hi gorgeous! I’m so glad you found me :D Thanks for the crazy compliments.

I had to put my beanies into storage too and it felt like I was cheating on them when I put them into their little boxes *sad* and then tucked them out of sight.

I love the idea of a pot luck dinner party. I can’t imagine having 25 people over and having to do all that work yourself – especially in your first week?! You’re a superstar lady.

    Have a great weekend <3

  • i am so happy i found your blog! i was practically drooling at the sight of the pasta and carrot cake…whenever i can find some gluten free food i buy out the whole store. in dc and ct i have been pretty lucky to find a TON of stores with different foods, the little local shops are wonderful, but recipes are always loved! there is a great cookbook that my aunt got me called ‘babycakes’ it’s from a bakery in nyc (where we just moved to from ct) and it’s amazing…you should look up some of the recipes online if you don’t have the book you might enjoy them!!! and i can totally relate to the thing about growing up…it’s rough, being a little girl seems so fun and easy and care-free.

    Hi Mariah!
I’m so happy you found me, welcome to Mediterranean Miss :3
The new variety of gluten-free foods is just wonderful. There are ~tons~ of places that offer everything under the sun. I’ve even heard rumors of gluten-free graham cracker crumbs to make pie crusts, which I can’t wait to try.
“babycakes,” hm. I’m always looking to expand my cookbook library, so I’ll be sure to give it a go! Thanks for the recommendation girl!

I’m definitely loving every stage of my life, but yes, I do miss being little. I am definitely happier than I’ve ever been now, today, with my life, my career, my body, etc etc, but I miss the magic. That’s why this blog is dedicated to getting the fairytale back in our adulthoods <3

The carrot cake was unreal, and the whole cake-for-breakfast thing is going to be repeated from this point on. It was a little bit life-changing ^~

The baby-sitter’s club was awesome. I always -loved- Dawn. She’s what inspired me to be something of a vegetarian when I was little, hahaha. How crazy is that?

    [Reply]

  • I wish I could have dinner parties! Yours looks so good…the food looks great and it just sounds like fun. My apartment is really small and it feels kind of crowded if there are more than one or two people over. Besides, most of my friends don’t eat like I do and they don’t want to try any of my “experiments” as they call them. Your cat is adorable! My cat is the opposite of Dolce. Beau is afraid of strangers, it takes him a while to warm up, so when other people come in he usually hides under the couch for a long time. He is really friendly once he gets familiar, but he can be so shy!

    As for the questions
    1. Jonathan Taylor Thomas, when I was really young. He was on Home Improvement and he also was the voice of young Simba in the Lion King- which may be part of the reason why I liked him.
    2. I loved soup and sometimes I had PB sans J. I was not a jam fan.
    3. I was also more of a reader than a TV person…I watched a few cartoons though. I really liked Looney Toons. Tweetey bird was my favourite.
    4. I don’t remember! I don’t think I ever ate bugs- at least not on purpose haha. I never really ate anything extremely gross because I was a picky eater with food allergies. I ate everything completely plain.
    5. I’m with you on the Little Mermaid, and also loved the Lion King.
    6. Never did anything so creative…I loved my Minnie Mouse costume when I was 6 though.
    7. When I was really little, I wanted whatever cereal had the cutest cartoon on the box. Usually it tasted awful, but I was happy with the box.
    8. I loved Pugsley. He is the pug beanie baby- so cute. I was obsessed with him. I love pugs.

By the way, I read your other post about incorporating meat again. I just want to say that everyone needs to do what is best for themselves and their bodies…and that can change over the course of your life. Just make whatever decisions are right for you now and don’t worry about what other people do, say, or think. I’m very sensitive about the way I eat as well and don’t really appreciate other peoples’ judgements, but I’m trying to tune it out because only I can know what is best for my own body. Taking care of yourself is the most important thing!
    Have a great weekend <3

Hi Lauren! I always love reading your comments; you leave superlong ones just like I do, and they’re a pleasure to read!

I hear you on the “experiment” front. I get teased at work all the time when I make GMs or pour chia seeds into my greek yogurt *sigh*. Thankfully, my friends are getting used to me – I even have a few converts!

When I was little I ate everything totally plain, too. I was actually such a fan of bland food that I would get excited about frozen dinners and airplane meals, to the dismay of my poor mother who was cooking amazing organic, flavorful meals every evening for us at home. Tsk.

Love that you were all about the box ^~ I think that’s so cute, and I have pugsley!! My theas has two pugs herself, they’re fun to play with. I like big dogs myself, but pugs certainly do have a little something special.

Thank you so much for the support <3 Incorporating meat isn’t going to be such a huge shift, I’m still planning on a 70-30/80-20 veg;omni diet, but it definitely -is- what’s working for me. Thank you so much for your wise words lady!
    Love you!

I do maybe once a week if even that, I would just get their waffle fries for a cheat night if anything! xoxo
